The point was that we utilized the chunk and pull strategy to pull the data separately by logical units and building a model on each chunk. So these models (again) are a little better than random chance. Rsample::initial_split(prop = 0.9, strata = "is_delayed") %>% outputs the out-of-sample AUROC (a common measure of model quality)ĭplyr::filter(carrier = carrier_name) %>%.I’m going to start by just getting the complete list of the carriers. I’m going to separately pull the data in by carrier and run the model on each carrier’s data. This is exactly the kind of use case that’s ideal for chunk and pull. In this case, I want to build another model of on-time arrival, but I want to do it per-carrier. After I’m happy with this model, I could pull down a larger sample or even the entire data set if it’s feasible, or do something with the model from the sample. Including sampling time, this took my laptop less than 10 seconds to run, making it easy to iterate quickly as I want to improve the model. I built a model on a small subset of a big data set. mod <- glm(is_delayed ~ carrier +ĭf_test$pred <- predict(mod, newdata = df_test)Īuc <- suppressMessages(pROC::auc(df_test$is_delayed, df_test$pred))Īs you can see, this is not a great model and any modelers reading this will have many ideas of how to improve what I’ve done. Now let’s build a model – let’s see if we can predict whether there will be a delay or not by the combination of the carrier, the month of the flight, and the time of day of the flight. # Take first 20K for each class for training setĬount(df_test, is_delayed) # A tibble: 2 x 2 # Assign random rank (using random and row_number from postgres) These classes are reasonably well balanced, but since I’m going to be using logistic regression, I’m going to load a perfectly balanced sample of 40,000 data points.įor most databases, random sampling methods don’t work super smoothly with R, so I can’t use dplyr::sample_n or dplyr::sample_frac. # Remove small carriers that make modeling difficultįilter(!is.na(is_delayed) & !carrier %in% c("OO", "HA"))ĭf %>% count(is_delayed) # A tibble: 2 x 2 # Get just hour (currently formatted so 6 pm = 1800) Let’s start with some minor cleaning of the data # Create is_delayed column in database This is a great problem to sample and model. Let’s say I want to model whether flights will be delayed or not. With only a few hundred thousand rows, this example isn’t close to the kind of big data that really requires a Big Data strategy, but it’s rich enough to demonstrate on. I’m using a config file here to connect to the database, one of RStudio’s recommended database connection methods: library(DBI) Let’s start by connecting to the database. I’ve preloaded the flights data set from the nycflights13 package into a PostgreSQL database, which I’ll use for these examples. And, it important to note that these strategies aren’t mutually exclusive – they can be combined as you see fit! In this post, I’ll share three strategies. Nevertheless, there are effective methods for working with big data in R. 1 This is an especially big problem early in developing a model or analytical project, when data might have to be pulled repeatedly. For example, the time it takes to make a call over the internet from San Francisco to New York City takes over 4 times longer than reading from a standard hard drive and over 200 times longer than reading from a solid state hard drive. Because you’re actually doing something with the data, a good rule of thumb is that your machine needs 2-3x the RAM of the size of your data.Īn other big issue for doing Big Data work in R is that data transfer speeds are extremely slow relative to the time it takes to actually do data processing once the data has transferred. The data has to fit into the RAM on your machine, and it’s not even 1:1. The fact that R runs on in-memory data is the biggest issue that you face when trying to use Big Data in R. But this is still a real problem for almost any data set that could really be called big data. Hardware advances have made this less of a problem for many users since these days, most laptops come with at least 4-8Gb of memory, and you can get instances on any major cloud provider with terabytes of RAM. In this article, I’ll share three strategies for thinking about how to use big data in R, as well as some examples of how to execute each of them.īy default R runs only on data that can fit into your computer’s memory. In fact, many people (wrongly) believe that R just doesn’t work very well for big data. For many R users, it’s obvious why you’d want to use R with big data, but not so obvious how.

The table later in this topic shows you an example of this.īy default, Excel looks for summary rows below the details they summarize, but it's possible to create them above the detail rows. For example, under (or above) the rows of sales data for March and April, use the SUM function to subtotal the sales for those months. Insert your own summary rows, with formulas, immediately below or above each group of detail rows. For more information about using the Subtotal function, see SUBTOTAL function. Use the Subtotal command, which inserts the SUBTOTAL function immediately below or above each group of detail rows and automatically creates the outline for you. Insert summary rows by using the Subtotal command To create these, do one of the following: If you want, your grouped detail rows can have a corresponding summary row-a subtotal. If installation gets tough, see bike mechanic legend Sheldon Brown’s 17 tips on installing computers. They aren’t as popular today with an industry moving to internal cables and wireless components, but are great for riders who want to avoid interference or battery issues. Once installed, they should be fine until you decide to buy a new one. They can be harder to install, but won’t require a battery for the sensor. The most basic sensors are connected by a thin cable. If you aren’t sure which part is which, see our previous article on mountain bike parts. I'm a software dev, but don't use Xcode at all, so I can't comment on it really. All apps open and scroll at pretty much full speed. Going back to the first point mentioning sluggishness, I really don't notice anything like that at least for ordinary web browsing and file system tasks. Safari is basically useless and just shows nothing most of the time without it (you can't turn it off), so you'll need to install Chrome or Firefox for web browsing. Something to note: no hardware acceleration out of the box. I'll write up a proper tutorial soon for others who want to do this. I was able to follow the Proxmox tutorial following that without any issue. Turns out I needed to change the VM's machine type to "q35", architecture type to "x86_64" (both CLI-only settings), delete the "-global ICH9-LPC.acpi-pci-hotplug-with-bridge-support=off" arg and change the "-device usb-kbd,bus=ehci.0,port=2" setting to "-device usb-kbd,bus=usb.0,port=2". Update: I got a VM fully working under TrueNAS Scale! It feels like using a computer from the 90s with HDD's. I mean it runs, it's usable, but it makes me want to pull my hair out and bang my head on the wall. and let's just say it's sitting there unused. Source: I installed Ventura intending it to be my main iPhone development machine. Enough to discourage me from daily driving it. Even if I avoid minimizing windows, the general feel of the VM is just sluggish and unpleasant. MacOS seems to want to enforce animations on you even if you don't want it. You can try to turn off some animations, but not everything can be turned off. I am not joking, it takes that long to animate that stupid thing. Just simple things like minimizing a window can lockup your VM for 5-10 seconds. Unlike Windows or Linux which runs quite fine in a VM without a GPU, MacOS is SLOW as molasses without it. Unless you have a supported GPU passed through to the VM, it will be near unusable. I'm going to save you potentially some time and disappointment. If you think that your dog’s dewclaws could be causing more problems than good, discuss the possibility of removal and other options with your veterinarian.Do dogs have thumbs? In the ongoing, slow-burning processes of evolution, parts of bodies adapt, change, or get left behind. Often dew claws can be overlooked during routine trims leading to ingrown nails and infections. Whether your dog is dew claw-free or polydactyl (having more than the standard number of digits), the toenails should always be properly maintained. Zink also feels that removing dew claws from working or agility dogs could cause related muscle groups in the leg to atrophy leading to injury. She believes the claw stabilizes the rest of the leg by digging into the ground, preventing twisting or torque. Zink has been able to show that when dogs run at full speed, their entire foot contacts the ground, including the dew claw. She has noticed a trend of carpal (wrist) arthritis in agility and hunting dogs that have had their dew claws removed. She believes that dew claws may be far more important to our dogs than previously thought. Christine Zink of Johns Hopkins University works exclusively with canine athletes. The breeds above are known to be powerful working dogs in snowy and mountainous areas so additional balance is a definite advantage. As far as the purpose of rear dew claws, researchers believe that they may help provide stability when walking on rough terrain. Bernard and Briard are genetically predisposed to rear dew claws, and even double rear dew claws. The trait makes these breeds favorites among hunters in certain areas. With food in scarce supply, the ability to climb after prey was a major benefit. This adaptation likely came about in these breeds out of necessity. Basenjis, Catahoula Leopard Dogs, and New Guinea Singing Dogs can climb trees nearly as well as cats, thanks in part to their genetically powerful and functional dew claws. The dew claw would have been quite useful for grasping and gripping carrion in order to tear away the meat with their teeth.Ĭertain breeds of dog have dew claws that are particularly strong and maneuverable. This purpose is a definite throwback to our dogs’ ancestors. For those dogs who have dew claws with muscular attachments, they can be helpful in gripping bones during chewing. Yet many dogs use this fifth digit for a variety of little tasks. Claws with poor attachments can get caught in carpeting, fabric or weeds and be torn. Since the nail does not contact the ground, it may grow out more quickly than the other nails causing injury. Unfortunately, the high position of the digit is what causes issues for some dogs. For the majority of dogs, that about sums up the action that the dew claw gets in a day. They sit at just the right height to skim the morning dew when your dog walks through the grass. Not only is removal uncommon in breeds like the Great Pyrenees, it is highly frowned upon by the AKC and serious breeders.ĭew claws were named for their positioning on the leg. For others, dew claws are considered part of the breed’s unique standard. Some feel that dew claws should be removed from puppies within days of birth, and this has come to be expected in many breeds. So how could a strange little toenail that doesn’t even touch the ground ever be of any use to your dog? In others, there is nothing but a thin layer of skin keeping it in place. You know that weird, dangly toenail that some dogs have partway up their forelimb? Have you ever wondered what possible purpose that thing could serve? In some dogs the digit is firmly attached by muscle and tendon. Games for the PlayStation continued to sell until Sony ceased production of both the PlayStation and PlayStation games on 23 March 2006 – over 11 years after it had been released, and less than a year before the debut of the PlayStation 3. But if you’re not careful, the added sugar-and calories from them-can pile up fast. Raisin bran is high in added sugar and refined carbs, which can negate the health benefits of its other ingredients, especially since most people eat more than the recommended serving size.CONVENIENT AND SATISFYING, cereal will always be a breakfast staple. What’s more, many people eat more than the recommended serving size listed on a cereal box, which means they consume substantially more sugar and unhealthy ingredients. While touted to be a source of heart-healthy whole grains, these benefits are outweighed by the high amount of sugar, which may raise your risk of heart disease ( 18, 19). Eating a lot of added sugar can also lead to cavities ( 14, 15, 16, 17).Īdditionally, health claims on raisin bran cereal can be misleading. Plus, eating too much sugar comes with its own downsides.Ī diet high in added sugar can increase your risk of obesity and chronic conditions like type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and even certain types of cancer. This means that one small serving of food comprises almost half of your sugar intake for the day. One cup (60 grams) of raisin bran cereal can contain up to 20 grams of sugar ( 1, 2, 3). This equates to approximately 12 teaspoons (50 grams) for someone following a 2,000-calorie diet ( 12).įurthermore, the American Heart Association says that women should stick to 6 teaspoons (25 grams) or less, while men should limit their intake to 9 teaspoons (38 grams) of added sugar per day ( 13). The 2015–2020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans state that added sugar should comprise no more than 10% of your total daily calories. Getting enough of these nutrients may help reduce your risk of diseases associated with deficiencies in them.Īlthough raisin bran is a source of several healthy nutrients, it tends to be high in added sugar and refined carbs. Raisin bran is rich in fiber and a variety of micronutrients that are added through fortification. Note that different brands of raisin bran offer varying amounts of these nutrients, so it’s good to read the nutrition label to find a product that provides the micronutrients you’re looking for. Raisin bran is also a particularly good source of iron, a critical nutrient for preventing iron deficiency anemia ( 11). Fortified cereals are an easy and effective way to increase micronutrient intake ( 8, 9).įurthermore, cereals fortified with folic acid, which is the synthetic form of the B vitamin folate, have helped reduce the incidence of neural tube defects in the United States ( 10). This is beneficial because many people in the United States don’t consume enough iron, calcium, or vitamins A, C, D, and E in their diet. Many of these micronutrients are added through fortification, a process in which vitamins and minerals that aren’t naturally present in a food item are added to the final product to make it more nutritious. Good source of micronutrientsĪ 1-cup (60-gram) serving of raisin bran is a good source of a wide variety of essential vitamins and minerals ( 1, 2, 3). Feelings of fullness can also help prevent overeating, which is a benefit if you’re looking to lose weight or prevent unwanted weight gain ( 6).Īdequate fiber intake may also help reduce your risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and other chronic conditions ( 7). It promotes bowel regularity and has protective effects against colon cancer ( 5).įiber helps you feel full for longer and may prevent dramatic drops in blood sugar between meals. Getting enough fiber is important for digestive health. However, surveys have found that most people in the United States only get around half of that amount in a typical day ( 4).Ī single serving of raisin bran cereal can meet approximately one-sixth of those needs, which primarily comes from the wheat and bran ingredients. The minimum recommended daily fiber intake for most people is around 30 grams. SUMMARYĭifferent brands of raisin bran have similar macronutrient profiles but can vary substantially in their added vitamin and mineral contents.Īlthough there’s not much research on the health benefits of eating raisin bran cereal specifically, studies have shown that certain nutrients in the cereal may have benefits. However, the added vitamin and mineral content can vary substantially, especially when it comes to calcium, iron, folate, and zinc. As you can see, the macronutrient - protein, fat, carbs - compositions and calorie contents of various brands of raisin bran are similar. Like virtually all of the suggestions for enhancements/fixes to keyword management it is been ignored for years. I recorded a feature request to at least have an option to allow you to preserve the entire hierarchy when your intention is to round trip the result of the export back into your library. Since I make use of quite a few "do not export" terms to aid is my keyword organization this created several new hierarchies every time I use Nik HDR Efex Pro. This worked for about a month when Adobe "fixed" the keyword handling in the Export module to remove any keyword terms marked "do not export" not only from the flat keyword list but also from the hierarchy. Nik did eventually try to fix it by using lightroom hierarchal keywords when exporting the images. This is a similar problem to one that occurred with the Nik HDR Efex Pro app. So, where would those keywords be hiding on the hard drive for ON1 to find ? >but if I start to type in a keyword into the new catalog LR does not make suggestions using the older keywords >reinstalled ON1 but all those old keywords still come up with an ON1 search >removed on1 with Revo Uninstaller so every bit is removed So I have experimented with a new LR catalog for new photos with a new simpler single keyword list ON1 has found ALL my old disused and even LR deleted keywords - did I say something about a big real quick mess maker? Best way is make a LR v/copy > remove the keywords> send to ON1 > edit > copy and paste to keyword back into the file in LR. ON1 uses a single list for keywords so when a file is sent to ON1 for editing it returns any hierarchy keywords as a single list - yeah big real quick mess maker lol. It's good, more like great for editing but a LONG way behind LR as a photo library. |
